Tyler and Aubrey were at our house Monday evening and I gave them a “Scripture Stories” page to color while we read from the Book of Mormon. Amy looked at the pages and said, (paraphrased, as I remember it) “Ah, I remember these. One time you gave me one of these to color and I colored all the pictures the same color. I started out pretty neatly, but realized that it was going to take me forever, so I kind of scribbled the rest. When I was done, you told me you were disappointed in me, because you thought I would do a better job. I was so sad and shocked, because I had always thought no matter what I did you would think it was wonderful.”

Jeff and I had just been talking earlier in the day about “at what point little children had to learn the world was a cold, cruel place and that their parents were not perfect.” The realization that I would not always think everything she did was wonderful was apparently Amy’s “Aha! moment.” I felt so terrible when she told me. I had never known that for all these years. The funny part about it was that when I was getting the Scripture Stories out for Tyler and Aubrey, there were a few in the folder that were colored.

I can't believe you posted about this...especially with that embarrassing picture.
You are not a bad mother! You are great! That is kind of a funny story. I will tell my mom stories from when we were younger about the boys picking on me or something she said that hurt my feelings and she always gets sad, but in truth it makes us who we are and well, I think you did a fantastic job.
Um, and the last you are is a bad mother.
Bad Mother! WhatEVER! Let's talk for a moment about all the wonderful things you have done for your family. All the countless hours of service and never ending love! You're the Tops I tell ya, the tops!
When I read your post, it was just shortly after we had been commenting on all your amazing virtues/qualities and talents! I'm sorry you weren't with us to hear what a terrifically wonderful mom (and human being, in general!) we all KNOW you are! We sure love you :)
We can all learn from this story. I am wondering what I may have said to my children when they were young that may have made them sad. But don't worry. She turned out great in spite of the scripture story STORY! I loved this post! And I am sure she thinks that you were the very Best Mom in the world. Can't wait to see you in Fairview!
